Official review by MathsThroughStories.org:
Young So You’s ‘While Mummy Hen Was Away’ is part of the world’s largest mathematical story picture book series, called TanTan Math Story (70+ titles). The English translation of this original South Korean version was done in 2013. The story is about five eggs being left on their own by Mummy Hen when she is taking a break. Little does she know that her eggs are at risks of being taken away by a wicked wolf, two curious children, and a sneaky duck. The story does well in providing a meaningful and fun context for children to learn about subtraction (and addition) without coming across as a mathematics textbook in disguise. Like most titles in this series, the book comes with a few mathematical word problems relating to the story to be solved at the end of the story. All in all, ‘While Mummy Hen Was Away’ is recommended for children aged 4+ years old. (Disclaimer: We received a complimentary inspection copy of this book from the publisher/author)
