Entry Requirements
- Each teacher can only submit one entry (i.e. the lesson video);
- Entries can be submitted by mathematics teachers from anywhere in the world, but the lesson must be conducted in standard English;
- Each entry (or lesson) can focus on more than one mathematical topic/skill (e.g. multiplication and measurement), but the chosen mathematical topic(s)/skill(s) must follow the age-related mathematics learning expectations of England's mathematics curriculum:
- For the 7-9 and 9-11 age cohorts, they are equivalent to the Years 3-4 and Years 5-6 expectations of England's primary mathematics curriculum respectively. To access these age cohorts' mathematics curriculum, please click here;
- For the 11-14 age cohort, this is equivalent to the Years 7-9. To access this age cohort's mathematics curriculum, please click here;
- All the entry videos must be between 15 minutes and 30 minutes;
- All the entry videos must have first been uploaded onto Youtube.com. Only the Youtube link to your video should be submitted - not an actual video file. (To upload a video longer than 15 minutes onto Youtube, this requires a few additional steps: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/71673?hl=en-GB);
- The name of the video must adopt the following format: School's name_Teacher's name_Age range. For example: London Primary School - Jane Smith - 7-9 years old class
- The title screen of the video should clearly feature the following key message and information:
- 'This video is part of the 2016 MathsThroughStories.org's annual international lesson video competition'
- Followed by the name of the teacher
- Followed by the age cohort of your class
- Followed by the name of your school and the country it is located in
- 'Everyone who is featured on this video has already given their permission to appear on the video'
- By submitting the video entry (and posting it on Youtube.com), the teacher and their school confirm that they have already sought permission from their students and their parents to be featured on the video;
- All entries must be submitted by the stated deadline.
Judging Criteria
- Creativity in embedding the teaching of mathematical concept(s) or skill(s) in a meaningful and engaging context through the use of stories. (This could either involve using existing stories (through picture books, chapter books or graphic novels) to introduce or reinforce the mathematical concept(s) or skill(s) in question or getting children to create their own original stories or both. For advice on how to use existing stories in mathematics teaching, you may find these books useful;
- Accuracy of mathematical concepts presented in the lesson;
- Ability to capture the different parts of the lesson and students' input;
- Quality of your reflection at the end of the video on how successful you believe the lesson is and what can be done to help improve the lesson further;
- The usefulness of the video as a professional development tool for fellow teachers.
